When Dr. Jerome Samelson chose the U.C. Berkeley School of Optometry, it was because he had a very sincere interest in helping improve the vision and vision health of others. Thirty years after opening his private practice in 1974 in San Leandro, Dr Samelson is still committed to taking care of people with kindness, enthusiasm, and sincerity.

Dr. Samelson provides basic eye exams daily to his patients, who range from infants to adults. Because he has completed a 125-hour course in treating eye disease and obtained his National Board Certification, Dr. Samelson is able to diagnose and treat many common eye diseases. Over the years, Dr. Samelson has provided several patients with early referrals for diabetes, stroke, hypertension and brain tumors. His early detection of these common ailments has saved the lives of several of his patients.

In addition to treating eye disease, Dr. Samelson co-manages patients who undergo Laser Vision surgery. Dr. Samelson provides the initial eye exams and eye workup that is provided to the eye surgeon. After the surgery, he works with the patient and the surgery team for six to twelve months to ensure that the procedure has provided the patient with the best results possible.

Due to his own athleticism, Dr. Samelson has a special interest in sports vision therapy. His expertise in this field has made him popular with several athletes (who have to remain nameless for confidentiality reasons). He has provided several local NBA players and golf pros with the latest in sports eyewear, helping them improve their game-time performance.

Dr. Samelson also gives back to the local community that has supported him throughout his 30 years of pracice. Dr. Samelson serves as the referral optometrist for the Davis Street Community Center (DSCC), which provides daycare for low-income families. By providing free eye exams to DSCC children, he is able to share his expertise with those who might not normally have access to such a high level of eye care.

Dr. Samelson's education, experience, and specialties make him a great addition to our expert team of optometrist at The Optometry Center. Dr. Samelson welcomes his previous patients to his new location of practice to provide them with the state of the art equipment with a wide selection of frames.
